Juventus and Manchester United to Battle Over Portuguese Star

It has been long reported that Juventus are interested in signing AS Monaco midfielder Bernardo Silva in the summer. Now, according to TuttoSport, Manchester United have joined the race to make a move for the Portuguese star this summer.

The 21-year-old playmaker has endured a difficult second campaign in Ligue 1. Injury in this summer’s Under-21 European Championships hampered his preparations and with five goals and just one assists in 17 starts this term, he hasn’t quite hit the same heights as during Monaco’s Champions League campaign last season.

However, that doesn’t take away from the qualities of the Portuguese international. Juventus were looking to sign him in January, but with Monaco asking for around €20 million, they decided to reevaluate come the end of the season, but that could have opened the door for others to step in.

Without knowing who Manchester United’s next boss will be, it’s hard to gauge their actual interest. However, if Jose Mourinho is appointed, there is the obvious link to his countryman. Silva has caught the eye since joining Monaco, his small build has not stopped him from performing in a very physical league, something that would be critical to adapting to the Premier League.

Serie A would be the perfect destination though. Max Allegri has apparently already given the signing his blessing and the attacking midfielder would fit into both his 3-5-2 system and wide in the 4-3-3 – especially if Antonio Conte decides to keep Juan Cuadrado at Chelsea next season.
Juventus may want to act before the European Championships in the summer, before Bernardo Silva shines on the big stage and they have more than just Manchester United to worry about.
