Chelsea player ratings: David Luiz produced a mixed bag (but which ace flopped with a 4?)

Thibaut Courtois – 6: Couldn’t really do much about either of Liverpool’s first-half goals. Beaten by a cracker from Jordan HendersonCourtois-Chelsea-title-542292.jpg

Branislav Ivanovic – 5: Was troubled by Adam Lallana early on and never really got to grips with James Milner. Better with the ball

Gary Cahill – 6: Chelsea’s best defender on the night and looked comfortable alongside David Luiz. But fluffed clearance led to Henderson’s goal

David Luiz – 7: He was everywhere tonight. Had two efforts on goal and a bloody nose – and that was before half time! Not the most polished performance but his fun factor deserves a couple of points. Same old David Luiz

Cesar Azpilicueta – 6: Up against Sadio Mane the Spaniard did reasonably well to force him inside. More impressive going forward though

N’Golo Kante – 5: Was stifled by Liverpool’s pressing game and wasn’t helped much when in possession. Failed to supply the attack, which is his main job alongside the supposedly more defensive-minded Nemanja Matic

Nemanja Matic – 6: Set up Diego Costa’s goal but failed to match up to Liverpool’s pressing game in the first half

Willian – 4: Absent for swathes of the game and would have expected to do better against makeshift left-back Milner. Disappointing

Oscar – 5: Innocuous for most of the game and subbed off for Pedro with six minutes left

Eden Hazard – 5: Offered the odd spark going forward but never really got into this game

Diego Costa – 6: Scored when he was given the chance but had an otherwise quiet night. He can’t be expected to carry this team every week though
