Liverpool’s Brazilian unhappy on Merseyside after difficult period

Lucas Leiva doesn’t want to continue as a backup, even though it will cause him huge grief to leave Liverpool after nine and a half years.

The Brazilian has been with us since Rafa Benitez signed him in summer 2007 and is approaching a decade at the club, which will earn him a testimonial.

But this term under Jurgen Klopp, Lucas has been used very sparingly and mainly as a centre-back, when the rest of his career has been in defensive midfield.

He’s only just turned 30 and believes he has plenty more to offer, which in truth, he probably does.

“The situation is not great. It is not something I want for my future, to have not many games,” he told Press Association Sport, cited by talkSPORT.

“I don’t want this for my career, especially at my age. I’m not close to retiring and have many years ahead of me.
“You want to play—we get paid to play—but I just try to be professional and help as much as I can and when I have the chance do my best.

“At this moment I have to deal with this and try to find a solution when I have the chance.

“I have to be professional, think about the team and see what is going to happen.

“The best place for me to be now is Liverpool. I cannot say [where] in one week’s time, one month’s time or four months’ time.

“I have to judge when something comes up if it is better.

“It has been a special season already and we have a chance to win trophies and that is something I consider as well.”

For Liverpool, it probably wouldn’t make sense to allow our longest serving player to leave. His experience will be vital in the dressing room and on the training pitch, especially if we properly involved in the Premier League title race.

We’d ask Lucas to hold out for another six months, enjoy his well deserved testimonial and move on come the summer!

Although if a decent offer arrives and he truly wants to depart, it would be wrong for the club to stand in his way…
