According to a recent report from the Yorkshire Evening Post, Leeds United defender Charlie Taylor is hopeful of earning a move to Liverpool when his contract at Elland Road expires this summer. But if that is the case, the Whites would be wise to approach Jurgen Klopp’s side to see if a deal can be done for one of his most promising players.
Given Taylor’s contract situation, if he wants to move on this summer there is no stopping him, and Leeds lost the opportunity to negotiate with prospective suitors when the January transfer window came and went.
However, that does not mean they cannot use Taylor’s move to their advantage and secure a temporary deal for Liverpool defender Joe Gomez.
The 19-year-old continues to be overlooked by Klopp while Lucas Leiva is inexplicably selected in central defence and James Milner is played out of position – albeit effectively – at left-back.
Gomez is a brilliant option in either position yet if Taylor leaves Leeds for Anfield and Liverpool sign another quality centre-half as expected, the teenager will continue to struggle for game time in the short term.
Not so at Leeds, where he could offer a fine alternative option in the centre of defence and also take Taylor’s place on the left side.
Given that he has a contract at Liverpool until the summer of 2022, and considering his promise and talent, it is unlikely Leeds could secure a permanent deal for Gomez.
However if they earn promotion back to the top flight they should consider a loan move that would bring in a Premier League quality player desperate to make up for lost time.
