Real Madrid eyeing shock Liverpool swoop as long-term replacement: Zidane a big fan

ZINEDINE ZIDANE reportedly has his eyes on Liverpool ace Joe Gomez as a shock target for Real Madrid.

The 19-year-old is highly rated at Anfield as the Reds tied him down to a new five-year contract back in January.

His early Liverpool career has been blighted by injury as a knee problem sidelined Gomez for 15 months.

But the former Charlton defender, who joined Liverpool in the summer of 2015, is now back in the picture at Melwood.

Since returning, Jurgen Klopp has handed him three first-team starts, all in the FA Cup, while Brendan Rodgers regularly used him at the beginning of last season prior to his injury.

And according to Spanish outlet Diario Gol, Zidane is an admirer at the Bernabeu.

The Frenchman, alongside Madrid president Florentino Perez, is planning a total revolution this summer.

Zidane’s team have been inconsistent of late, with even his top stars in need of a wake up, and Barcelona’s Champions League heroics this week has alarmed Madrid.

A new project is underway at the La Liga giants with additions being lined up throughout the team.

Zidane wants a new goalkeeper, attacking midfielder and striker with the boss ready to offload star players to make space.

But his defensive plans show how big a future he sees for Liverpool’s Gomez.

Despite his lack of first-team action at Anfield, France legend Zidane is said to have a ‘weakness’ for the London-born defender.

Gomez can play either as a centre-back or left-back, and he could be moved for as a long-term solution for Madrid.

Pepe is apparently heading for the Chinese Super League, while Sergio Ramos’ age also means his days are limited at the heart of the defence at the Bernabeu.

The Spain international turns 31 later this month, and even though he is still performing at a top level, the future is on Madrid’s agenda.

Liverpool are unlikely to want to part with Gomez this summer having just secured his new contract, but Zidane could try and lure him to the club down the line.
